The Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program, which is also known as SNAP, has been helping people for the past 40 years. This program is designed to help low-income individuals buy the food that they need in order to maintain good health. It is estimated that 28 million people in America use the SNAP program each year.

Am I Eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program?

Your household income and resources will determine whether you are eligible for SNAP. Your vehicles and bank accounts will be considered household resources. However, there are certain resources that will not be used to determine whether you are eligible for SNAP. This includes the resources that are used by people who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Social Security Income.

Most people who work and receive a low-income are able to get food stamps. Elderly people, homeless people and the disabled can also get food stamps. You can use the pre-screening tool in order to determine whether you are eligible for food stamps.

How to Apply for SNAP and Where You Can Apply

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is owned by the government. However, local or state agencies run this program. You can visit the Social Security Office and local SNAP office in order to apply. You can call the office if you are unable to visit it. You can also have another person visit the office and apply on your behalf.

You will have to let the office know in writing that you have designated another person to apply on your behalf. There are some states that will allow you to apply online. You will have to fill out an application, have an interview and provide a list of your income sources and expenses.

You may not have to do an in-office interview if no one from the household is able to go to the office because of their disability or their age. If you do not do an in-office interview, then the interview may be done over the phone. Someone may also come to your home to do the interview.

What You Can Bring to Apply for Food Stamps

You can bring the following to apply for food stamps:

If you have a job, then you will need to bring a copy of your last four check stubs. You can also get a letter from your employer saying how much you made in the last minute. If you have lost your job, then you will need to bring an unemployment letter. You will also have to bring proof of unemployment benefits.
You will need to bring proof of household resources. This includes things such as your checking account, savings account, bonds and stocks. If you have a credit union membership, then you will also need to bring proof of that.

You need to bring your proof of income. This can be a copy of your last year's tax return. You can bring a profit and loss statement if you are self-employed.

If you are a college student, then you will need to bring a list of all of your college expenses. This includes your tuition, fees, books and housing costs. This can include financial aid that you are getting in the form of loans, scholarships and grants.

You will need to bring the Social Security numbers of everyone in the household. The food stamp certifier can help someone in the household who does not have a Social Security number get one.

SNAP EBT Card

The multi-colored food stamps do not exist. You will get an electronics transfer benefit card, which is also known as the EBT card. It works like a bank debit card. You will get your own pin number. You can replace your EBT card by contacting the food stamp office.

What You Cannot Buy

You can use SNAP to buy just about any type of food. You can also use it to buy seeds that can be used to grow your own food. You will not be able to use SNAP to buy non-food items, vitamins, alcohol, tobacco and food that is supposed to be eaten inside of a store.
