Government and Life Assistance Program

The US developed the Life Assistance Program. The program provides government cell phones to those who are in need of one. In fact, it is thought to be one of the most successful programs the US government ever developed. Approximately 15 million people obtained their cell phone via this program, and every day new demands are being processed.

Each US state authorized several state and regional institutions to provide the cell phones to the people who need it. The government also worked out an agreement with several cellphone companies, whose services you will be able to use once you receive your phone.

How to apply for one?

Naturally, this program is meant for the people who can't afford a phone on their own. Before you apply for one, the government needs to make sure that you need one. We will go through 4 steps that will help you determine whether you are eligible for the program.

1. Eligibility

Before you figure out how to obtain a phone, you need to check if you are eligible to receive one. Generally speaking, people who already participate in the programs listed in the list below are the people who qualify for one:

• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
• Supplemental Security Income
• Federal Public Housing Assistance
• Veterans Pension and Survivor's Benefit.
• Tribal Head Start

Note that these are not the only people who are eligible. It is best that you check this website for more information.

2. Locate State Provider

Once you find out that you qualify for the program, you need to find the provider located in your state. Currently, 49 states participate in this program, and you can see the list of these states on this website. Furthermore, you can also find which companies that provide these phones and what type of phones they provide.

3. Select Your Provider

Most states have several providers, and you should select the provider that is best aligned with your needs. Different providers offer different plans and ways by which you can get in touch with them. Before you make a decision, go through your options carefully. Though this is a governmental program, the companies may offer different programs, different services and different types of phones.

Once you narrowed your choices to a few companies, visit their websites to find more information about them. Also, you can contact these companies (naturally, if you have a telephone) and ask them about the details. Be aware of the fact that, once you sign a contract with these companies, you won't be able to switch to other companies for at least a year. So check their reputation, stability, effectiveness, customer service, etc.

4. Final Step

Once you made sure that the company of your choice suits your interests, you can either apply via telephone or by going to the company's website. The easiest way to apply for a phone is through their site since it is a lot quicker and more straightforward. Moreover, if you have your documents in a digital format you can upload them via the company's enrollment program; upload is safe and fast.

And that is it. Once you go through all these steps, your phone will arrive at your designated address via delivery (FedEx or USPS). Delivery time oscillates depending on the company you choose, their speed on processing applications, their delivery option services, weather conditions, etc. If your phone doesn't arrive as soon as you expect it, try to be patient.

Also, be mindful of the fact that the government won't assist you during your application, shipment or installation process. Most of the time it is up to the telephone company to guide you through the process, so it is crucial that you pick a credible company. When you get your free mobile phone, you will also receive instructions on how to install and use them.
